Volumes of Voices

by Chris Carlson

Derived from a collaboration with Carlin Wragg at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program and the New York Public Library, this recording is a live 8 channel performance mixed to stereo using third order ambisonics. The performance begins with continuously looping samples of books and mechanical devices from the library and builds as flute whistle tones and piano + violin recordings are sampled and looped in real time from an Akai reel to reel tape deck. The sampled material is heavily processed through a Pro Co "Rat" distortion, a Mackie mixer, and a custom 8 channel filtered feedback delay system (built with ChucK). The result is a thick onslaught of shifting harmonic noise.
