These recordings document a new live set developed for UVA's Telemetry Music Series, Fall 2018.
The performance is built entirely around three copies of Borderlands Granular, an iPad app designed for gestural control of granular synthesis. This technique involves the superposition of small time fragments of sound to create complex, evolving textures and timbres. In this performance, one copy of the app is dedicated to processing real-time input from an electric guitar and the two other app instances, which operate on prepared sounds. Additional elements in the processing chain include several guitar pedals - ZVEX Instant Lofi Junky, Moog MF Trem, Pro Co Rat, and a Strymon El Capistan, and a Mackie VLZ 1202 mixer for routing and EQ.
Two recordings are presented here:
"Bridge" is a capture of the final performance at the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative in Charlottesville, VA, October 6.
"Telemetry" is the first and final rehearsal of the set, recorded approximately 20 hours before the show.
Both recordings have the same internal structure, but variations in the granular processing, live mixing, and temporal / gestural choreography result in different textures, dynamics, and pacing.
Thank you for listening.
